The Council of Ministers, acting on a proposal from Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, has resolved to dissolve the Municipality of Melito for 18 months. The decision was made "in light of the proven influence of organized crime on the administration."
The Municipality had already been dissolved on May 15, 2023 due to the simultaneous resignation of 14 out of 24 municipal councilors.
The management of the Municipality will be entrusted to a special commission with the aim of restoring the proper functioning of the municipal machine and countering mafia infiltration.
This is the second dissolution for Melito in less than 20 years, after the one in 2005.

The decision of the Council of Ministers is part of a broader context of the fight against organized crime in Campania, where in recent months several municipalities have been placed under special administration, including Torre Annunziata, Castellammare di Stabia and Marano.
The election of the new City Council and the new Mayor of Melito has been postponed to 2025 or spring 2026.
The choice of the commissionership represents a strong signal against the pressure of organized crime on the management of public affairs in Campania.
