Barbara Balzerani, a former militant of the Red Brigades, has died at the age of 75. Born in Colleferro in 1949, Balzerani joined the terrorist organization in 1975 and became a prominent figure, involved in several acts of violence, including kidnappings and murders.
After years of criminal activity, she was arrested in 1985, sentenced to life in prison and subsequently released in 2006 after serving her sentence.
Although he never showed true remorse for his past actions, Balzerani later demonstrated a critical attitude towards the armed struggle, participating in a 1987 television interview together with other former members of the Red Brigades, in which the definitive end of the organization and the use of violence as a political instrument was sanctioned.
His stand and declaration of regret for the damage caused by his criminal activity marked a turning point in his life and in his public perception.
With her release in 2006 and her full freedom in 2011, Barbara Balzerani has definitively distanced herself from her extremist past, leaving behind a controversial period of Italian history.
