The Court of Appeal of Naples has annulled the precautionary custody order for Salvatore Allard, 59 years old, one of the two suspects for the murder of the superintendent of the State Police Dominic Attianese, killed on December 4, 1986 during a robbery in a jewelry store in the Pianura neighborhood of Napoli.

Allard was arrested on February 5th along with Giovanni Rendina, 60, as part of new investigations that, through a reanalysis of the scientific evidence collected 37 years ago, had led the Prosecutor's Office to acquire new evidence against the two.

In particular, thanks to technological advances in the Apfis application used by the Forensic Police, it was possible to compare the fingerprints collected at the crime scene with those of Allard and Rendina.

The Court of Review, however, upheld the appeal presented by Allard's defense attorney, Domenico Dello Iacono, who contested the validity of the fingerprint review and the forensic team's failure to explicitly indicate the sixteen points of overlap of the papillary ridges (the so-called minutiae) between the fingerprint and the ring finger of Allard's right hand.

Following yesterday's hearing, the Court of Review overturned the precautionary measure ordered against Allard, who was therefore released from prison.

The Naples Prosecutor's Office may appeal the Review Court's decision. The investigation into the murder of Superintendent Attianese continues.

The murder of Domenico Attianese is a complex case that has dragged on for over 37 years. Allard's release from prison represents an unexpected turning point in the investigation, but it doesn't mean his case has been definitively closed. The Naples Prosecutor's Office will continue to seek the truth and shed light on this tragic event.
