Yesterday a Pompei, an important intervention by the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of the Torre Annunziata Group Command took place to combat the illicit trafficking of archaeological finds.
Following a search, archaeological finds dating back to between the 7th and 6th centuries BC were seized from the home and optics shop of an individual living in Pompeii, accused of receiving stolen goods.
Currently, the origin of the finds is subject to verification and for the moment they are kept in the warehouses of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, following an agreement signed in 2019 and renewed in 2023 between the Management of the Archaeological Park and the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The items seized and on which investigations are underway by the Carabinieri coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata are the following:
1. Jug in impasto, biconical body, short cylindrical neck and slightly flared rim, decorated with ribs on the handle and shoulder, small gap on the rim. Dimensions height 15,5 cm, width at the shoulder 14 cm.
2. Brown impasto askos, cylindrical neck set vertically on the globular body, flat bottom decorated with incisions at the base of the neck and on the back of the handle and with small flattened bosses set longitudinally on the body. Dimensions: height max. 20 cm, width at the shoulder 18 cm.
3. Impasto skyphos, with a deep ovoid basin ending in an indistinct vertical lip, horizontal rod-shaped handles, slightly oblique, set just below the lip. Decoration consisting of a deeply incised parallel line, placed just below the handles. Dimensions: height 11,5 cm, diam. Foot 5 cm, diam. Mouth 12 cm.
4. Smoothing trowel of narrow and elongated shape with a flat face, obtained from pebble. Dimensions cm. 13 x 4.
5. Ceramic amphora tip, highly polished by water washout. Dimensions cm. 5 x 4.
