Former Seleção, Real Madrid and AC Milan striker Robson de Souza, better known as Robinho, was arrested and transferred to Tremembé prison, after the Italian justice system sentenced him to nine years in prison for rape. The news has raised concerns for the physical safety of the footballer, as stated by the lawyer José Eduardo Alckmin in an interview with CNN.
The defense fears that Robinho is exposed to blackmail and mistreatment during his time in prison. The former footballer's lawyer has announced an appeal against the detention to have the case examined by more Supreme Court judges. Robson de Sousa was arrested by the federal police after Supreme Court judge Luiz Fux rejected the defense's request to suspend the execution of the sentence.
The athlete, who was with his family in his villa in Guaruja, was taken to the headquarters of the federal police in Santos and later transferred to a penitentiary. Robinho's defense argues that the approval of the Italian sentence by the judges is unconstitutional and hopes for a review by the Supreme Court. However, the request to postpone the transfer to prison was rejected by Judge Fux.
The magistrates decided for immediate imprisonment considering the period of freedom that Robinho enjoyed after his conviction in Italy, which he had escaped by moving to Brazil, knowing that he would not be extradited. The former footballer had been convicted of the gang rape of a young Albanian woman in Milan in 2013. The victim was unconscious due to alcohol abuse, while Robinho and his accomplices have always maintained that the relationship was consensual.
