The Guardia di Finanza (Fiamme Gialle) of the Treviso Provincial Command conducted an operation aimed at preventing and suppressing the illicit trafficking of fuel from Eastern Europe destined for Italy, evading taxes. The organization's final destination was Napoli and its province.
During the operation, a shipment of 27.000 liters of contraband diesel, disguised as anti-corrosion liquid, and an articulated truck used for illegal transport were seized.
The driver was reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office for smuggling petroleum products, and the judicial police activity was validated by the Treviso Judicial Authority.
The vehicle, coming from Hungary and headed to Italy via the Tarvisio border crossing, was identified by the Treviso Group's financial police during a nighttime check at the Venezia Est motorway toll booth.
The driver, of Slovakian nationality, showing uncertainty about the transported load and the requested information, was stopped and subjected to further checks which led to the seizure of the goods.
27 litres of contraband diesel seized
An analysis of the contents of the 27 1000-litre containers confirmed that the liquid, presented as an anti-corrosive, had the same physical characteristics as automotive diesel fuel.
Tax fraud related to the smuggling of petroleum products poses a threat to state revenues and fair competition, with possible links to criminal activities.
The constant and scrupulous work of law enforcement is essential to effectively combat illicit fuel trafficking, with active checks on major roads, including at night and on holidays, to identify fraudulent practices and prevent economic and social damage.
