On the night between Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March, daylight saving time will return, with the clocks having to be moved forward one hour. A transition that, according to the Italian Society of Environmental Medicine (Sima), has negative effects on health, energy, bills, the environment and citizens' pockets.
sim: “Permanent daylight saving time would benefit the environment and your wallet”
The adoption of permanent daylight saving time all year round, according to Sima, would produce in our country lower energy consumption for about 720 million kwh equivalent, with a saving on bills of about 180 million euros per year. Furthermore, it would translate into a reduction in climate-altering emissions equal to 200.000 tons of CO2 less.
The switch to daylight saving time and vice versa also has negative effects on human health. It alters the circadian rhythm, the biological clock of our body, with negative consequences on blood pressure, heart rate and sleep.
For these reasons, Sima asks the Meloni Government to commit to getting Italy to the definitive abandonment of solar time by adopting summer time all year round. A possibility foreseen by the European Union which already in 2019 approved a Directive that leaves wide discretion to the Member States.
