The Carabinieri of the Castelnuovo company, in the province of Lucca, have arrested a 51-year-old man from Napoli.
The man was stopped while trying to defraud a 91-year-old woman from Castelnuovo, pretending to be a member of the Carabinieri.
The scam, known as the “false policeman and false lawyer” scam, is usually used against elderly and vulnerable people. It consists of making them believe that a family member has caused a serious accident and that money is needed to pay the bail.
This time, the agreed sum was 1.000 euros, plus approximately 2.500 euros in gold jewelry that the woman had prepared for delivery to the scammer.
Fortunately, the scammer was caught in time and arrested. The woman, suspecting the scam and remembering a recent awareness campaign for the elderly, asked her neighbors for advice just as the individual was arriving.
This prompted the scammer to flee by car, which was promptly reported to the police and tracked down shortly after.
