One conviction and four acquittals: this is the verdict issued by the sole judge Norma Cardullo of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere court at the end of the trial on the cases of absenteeism to the Palace of Caserta.
Giovanni Maiale was sentenced to one year and five months of imprisonment, while the other defendants Benedetto Petriccione, Leonisio Ammirati, Francesco Martone and Giovanni Di Sarno, all former employees of the Reggia except Martone and Ammirati, still in service, were acquitted.
The workers of the security sector of the UNESCO heritage monument were involved in an investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere and the Flying Squad of the Caserta Police Headquarters, with the execution, in May 2018, against Maiale and another employee who pleaded guilty before the trial, of the precautionary measure issued by the GIP of the obligation to sign before entering into service and after finishing working hours.
The investigation began with the theft of the takings from the Royal Palace's snack bar; while investigating the theft, the detectives of the Flying Squad discovered the alleged cases of absenteeism, with employees who, instead of keeping an eye on the Royal Palace, were absent for hours during their working hours to go eat a pizza or run personal errands, making the thieves' job even easier.
A reconstruction that was deemed existent by the judge only for Maiale and not for the other four defendants.
