There is an investigation into the tragedy of the 13-month-old child bitten and killed by two pitbulls in the courtyard of a house, while the child's mother and uncle tried in vain to scare the animals away. The dynamics are still unclear.
According to initial reports, the child was in the arms of his mother and uncle when one of the pitbulls attacked him. The other dog then joined in the attack. The mother tried to intervene to defend her son, injuring herself, while the uncle fell to the ground, hurting his knee.
Despite the immediate arrival of the ambulance, the child did not survive.
The pitbulls were taken away by the veterinary service of the ASL of Salerno and locked in a kennel in Caserta. They had never shown signs of aggression in the past.
Investigations are underway to determine the causes of the incident. The mayor of Eboli, Mario Conte, expressed his condolences to the victim's family and announced that he will follow the matter closely.
The episode has rekindled the debate on the possession of pitbull dogs. OIPA, the International Organization for the Protection of Animals, has asked the legislator to "regulate the possession of certain types of dogs that are too often chosen by people who are not able to handle them correctly". Aidaa, the Italian Association for the Defense of Animals and the Environment, has called for "ascertaining the dynamics of the facts before casting the blame on the two dogs".
Dog training expert Pierluigi Raffo stressed that “the responsibility lies with those who handle dogs of particular breeds, who should follow a specific training course and obtain a license. But unfortunately almost no one does it, and no one checks”.
