French actor Gérard Depardieu, known for his extraordinary screen presence and exuberant personality, is now facing a series of sexual assault allegations that are rocking the French film industry. Two women have filed complaints against Depardieu for sexual assault and harassment, taking the matter to the authorities.
The first accusation dates back to the set of the film “Le Magicien et les Siamois” directed by Jean-Pierre Mocky in 2014. A set designer said that Depardieu grabbed her legs and groped her while she was on the set. The woman, a 53-year-old mother, described the experience as a “wolf trap” and said she suffered from post-traumatic stress after the incident.
The second allegation concerns a short film shot in 2014, when a 24-year-old assistant claimed that Depardieu sexually harassed her. The actor allegedly touched the woman inappropriately and said obscene phrases, causing discomfort and distress.
These are not the only allegations Depardieu faces: in 2020, he was investigated for rape and sexual assault against actress Charlotte Arnould, while in Spain a journalist and writer accused him of raping her in 1995.
Depardieu has denied all the accusations, providing his “truth” in a letter sent to Le Figaro last October. However, the complaints and testimonies of the alleged victims have raised questions about the actor’s conduct and sparked a debate about the dynamics of power and control in the world of cinema.
