One of the most skilled pickpockets on the Naples Metro has been arrested: 48-year-old Vincenzo Siena, a familiar face to law enforcement. This is the fifth pickpocket arrest in just a few weeks in Naples, where the phenomenon, aided by the significant influx of street criminals, has increased exponentially in recent times.
Faced with such a situation, law enforcement stepped up their controls, resulting in Vincenzo Siena being arrested after he had just stolen a smartphone from the backpack of a boy on a school trip.
In Piazza Montesanto, while the student was getting off the Metro, the pickpocket acted very quickly without the unfortunate student noticing anything.
At that point the Carabinieri of the company intervened Napoli Center that had set up an anti-pickpocketing service in the Metro and in the areas with the highest tourist influx.
Vincenzo Siena was stopped, arrested and searched. In the pockets of the 48-year-old, in addition to the boy's smartphone, several identification documents including identity cards, health cards and driving licenses registered to as many people who had reported the theft.
Fifth pickpocket arrest in a few days
The military contacted all the legitimate owners to return the stolen goods. Investigations are underway now for the Carabinieri of the Naples center company (we are at the fifth arrest for pickpocketing in a few days) to verify whether the 48-year-old has carried out other thefts with skill.
The provincial command of Naples renews its advice in the fight against pickpockets:
- Before boarding, make sure all the bags you are carrying are closed.
- Carry bags and purses with the opening facing inward and protect them with one hand;
- Don't keep your wallet and smartphone in your back pocket, but keep them in your front pocket;
- Carry backpacks and fanny packs on the front;
- Stay focused and don't let yourself be distracted by your smartphone or other travellers' conversations;
- Avoid getting surrounded by people who seem to know each other.
