International Jazz Day 2024, proclaimed by UNESCO, will be celebrated in Naples with Gianluca Petrella and his Cosmic Renaissance.
Promoted by the Municipality of Naples as part of the Naples City of Music project, the International Jazz Day 30, conceived by Herbie Hancock in 2024, will be celebrated in Naples on April 2011.
The protagonist will be the trombonist Gianluca Petrella who will perform in a full band at the State Archives of Naples, in Piazzetta del Grande Archivio, 5 at 21 pm. Admission will be free upon reservation, which can be made from April 23 at 15.00 pm through the Eventbrite platform.
The concert is also made possible thanks to the inter-institutional collaboration with the State Archives for the enhancement of the site with cultural and entertainment events. After the Porta del Parco Auditorium in Bagnoli, Castel Capuano and the Basilica of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli, the number of monumental sites and places of art is thus expanded, which, by hosting initiatives promoted by the administration, can be enjoyed by an increasingly wider audience.
The Apulian jazz musician Gianluca Petrella will present the Cosmic Renaissance project, inspired by the music of Sun Ra, an American pianist, composer, poet and philosopher among the most controversial figures in modern jazz, known for his “cosmic philosophy” that Petrella takes up and makes his own by delving into the sonic labyrinths of the blackest music to trace new routes on Afrofuturist cartography.
As the great Nina Simone said, jazz is not just music, it is a lifestyle, a way of being, a way of thinking. It is from this fundamental incipit that Naples, which has its own historic jazz tradition, becomes an important showcase to celebrate jazz and the culture it represents. A culture that has its roots in the defense of human dignity, democracy and civil rights and that finds in music the power to unite people all over the world.
UNESCO promotes International Jazz Day in over 190 countries, led by Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who is UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and President of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.
