As part of investigations conducted by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Ravenna, last Wednesday, during a joint operation by the State Police and the Guardia di Finanza of Ravenna, an inspection was carried out on a cargo ship flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, which arrived at Ravenna during the night and was coming from Northern Europe.
The inspection was carried out in depth with the fundamental contribution of the divers of the Rimini Naval Air Operations Department of the Guardia di Finanza, who scanned the submerged part of the hull.
After several hours of activity and despite the difficulties related to the terrible weather and sea conditions, several packages were found inside the sea intake pipes, located at a depth of approximately 9 meters from the waterline, clearly not part of the ship's equipment.
The operators extracted the packages, handing them over to the anti-drug investigators of the Flying Squad and the Economic and Financial Police Unit in charge of the investigations. The contents of the packages were immediately verified: 139 blocks containing very pure cocaine, for a total of approximately 150 kilograms, carefully protected by waterproof packaging designed to safeguard the integrity of the load.
The value of the cocaine placed on the market would have brought in 25 million euros
The value of the recovered and seized drugs is estimated at over five million euros wholesale and approximately 25.000.000 euros if compared to retail sales (310 thousand doses).
The operation, which also involved the use of a helicopter from the aforementioned Naval Air Operations Department of the Guardia di Finanza and canine units on the ground, is part of the broader context of the fight against international drug trafficking and was conducted in close coordination with the Central Directorate for Anti-Drug Services and the Central Operations Service of the State Police in Rome.
