The Naples Court of Appeal issued a surprising decision in the murder of Domenico Attianese, Chief Superintendent of the State Police, which occurred during a robbery in 1986. Salvatore Allard, one of the suspects, was released from pre-trial detention thanks to his successful social reintegration, resulting in his lack of involvement in the crime.
Allard, 59, was accused along with Giovanni Rendina, 60, still in prison, and a third man, of the crime of aggravated murder in competition. The investigations into the cold case were reopened thanks to new technologies and the detection of a fingerprint 37 years after the tragic robbery in the Romanelli jewelry store in Pianura, where Attianese lost his life.
During the robbery, the Superintendent intervened to prevent the crime but was disarmed and then killed with a gunshot to the head. The investigation, coordinated by the Naples Prosecutor's Office, led to the resolution of the case 38 years after the murder. However, the court's decision to release Allard was motivated by his path of social reintegration, which distanced him from criminal circles.
The Municipality of Naples commemorated Attianese by dedicating a public garden to him, the Attianese Park, located in the Pianura neighborhood where he lived with his family. In May 1987, Attianese was awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Valor, a recognition that testifies to his courage and sacrifice in the service of the community.
Despite the decision to release Allard, the prosecution case remains solid and could lead to indictment requests in the coming weeks. The memory of Domenico Attianese continues to be honored by institutions and the community, as the case nears a possible conclusion.
