Plebiscito Square in Naples It was occupied by 500 cardboard coffins to denounce the tragedy of deaths at work.

This initiative is part of the national campaign “Zero deaths at work” organized by Uil, which began in Rome in Piazza del Popolo. At the entrance to the square, in front of the coffins, a large panel displays the title of the campaign along with the figures of recent years, including the tragic statistic of 1.041 victims in 2023.

In the square, in addition to the union members and some workers, there was the general secretary of Uil, Pierpaolo Bombardieri, who underlined the need to apply existing legislation and to allocate more resources for safety at work. “It takes money and time to enforce the laws”, Bombardieri said.

"We have few inspectors, and the Government, in the last decree, invested only two million for new hires. I remember that when there was the farmers' battle, the Government found 600 million in 48 hours."

Another important theme raised by Bombardieri is that of justice. He highlighted how the coffins exhibited in Naples represent the story of many people who often have not obtained justice due to the slowness of the trials, which risk being time-barred in the second instance.

The general secretary of UIL has put forward the proposal to establish a special prosecutor's office and to introduce the crime of workplace homicide into the Italian legal system. “The Government has introduced nautical homicide – watch Bombardieri – we believe that 1.041 deaths per year and 500.000 accidents require justice.”

The event's goal, in addition to drawing attention to the victims, is to raise public awareness of the seriousness of the problem. Bombardieri concludes by saying that a human life should never be sacrificed for profit and that society must react to prevent these incidents from becoming commonplace. “Today may not be about us, but tomorrow it could be our turn,” warns Bombardieri, urging everyone to join the fight against deaths at work.
