Wild West-like scenes unfolded today at noon in Piazza Castello, in the heart of Afragola , a town just outside Naples. An argument between two families, already at odds in the past, escalated into a violent brawl involving baseball bats and, subsequently, a shootout.
The toll is five wounded, three of whom were hit by gunfire (one in the leg and one in the abdomen, the most serious) and two wounded by blunt objects, including to the head. Fortunately, no one is in danger of life.
The shooting took place near the church of San Giorgio, where some baptisms had been celebrated shortly before. The bullets fired and the cartridge cases found on the spot by the State Police and the Carabinieri, who intervened for the investigation, foreshadow a toll that could have been much more dramatic.
Shock and anger among the population and institutions. The mayor of Afragola, Antonio Pannone, defines the incident as “unacceptable”, underlining the aggravating circumstance of the shooting that occurred a few meters from a church frequented by families with children. Pannone denounces the “absurd ease in having firearms” and calls for greater commitment from the State in the protection of the territory.
The prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, promptly ordered the intensification of control services in the area and called a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security to discuss the measures to be adopted to prevent the repetition of similar episodes.
