A magnitude 3.9 earthquake, centered in the gulf at a depth of about 3 km, woke residents of the Campi Flegrei and Naples area at 5:44 this morning. The tremor, part of a seismic swarm that has been ongoing for days, was distinctly felt, especially on the upper floors of buildings, causing fear but no damage to people or property.
Numerous people from Bacoli to Naples took to the streets frightened by the tremor, which was followed by some aftershocks of lesser intensity. The mayors of Pozzuoli and Bacoli, Gigi Manzoni and Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, invite the population to remain calm and to contact the Civil Protection or Municipal Police numbers for any reports.
Last night, an earthquake of magnitude 2,4 was felt at 3.47 am by residents in the Campi Flegrei area, in the Agnano and Bagnoli neighborhoods of Naples and the surrounding municipalities, between Pozzuoli and Bacoli, as part of a seismic swarm characterized by about fifty tremors, but all of low intensity, never exceeding 1,4 in magnitude.
"This morning's earthquake was strong, with a magnitude of 3.9 recorded by the Vesuvius Observatory seismographs. As is often the case on these occasions, we immediately responded with Civil Protection volunteers and the Municipal Police. No damage has been reported at this time. The mayor of Bacoli , for his part, explains: "It was very strong. We all felt it. And many were afraid. Magnitude 3.9. Time 5:44. Epicenter at sea, in our gulf, off the coast of Bacoli. I want to reassure you right away. We have not reported any damage to property or people. We clearly felt a new tremor linked to the bradyseism of the Campi Flegrei.
Among the strongest since we are experiencing the resurgence of the seismic phenomenon. I am in contact with the Vesuvius Observatory and the National Civil Protection. I have called the Municipal Operations Center and we are working in synergy with the Prefecture of Naples. The situation is under constant monitoring. I realize the concerns”.
