The military of the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Naples have seized 1,2 tons of contraband and counterfeit foreign manufactured tobacco in Villa Literno, arresting in flagrante delicto an individual of Italian nationality for the crimes of counterfeiting and receiving stolen goods.
During a routine economic inspection of the territory, the financial police of the Frattamaggiore Group noticed a van heading towards an unusual area of the Caserta municipality.
Suspecting the situation, the finance police proceeded with a check that led to the discovery and seizure of the large quantity of contraband cigarettes.
In addition to the illegal cargo, a Ford Transit truck with Italian license plates was also seized. Further checks revealed that the cigarette packets all bore the same unique code (qr-code), which should have corresponded to only one single packet.
The 1,2 tons of cigarettes seized could have generated an illicit profit of over 200.000 euros if placed on the illegal market. The investigations are ongoing under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Naples North.
The phenomenon of smuggling of foreign manufactured tobacco is on the rise.
Since the beginning of the year alone, the finance police of the Naples Provincial Command have seized over 2,5 tons of foreign-produced tobacco and reported 123 people in various operations.
