A 45 year old man was arrested by the Carabinieri, in Napoli, at the conclusion of investigations into a fraud committed against a pensioner - for a value of over ten thousand euros - which took place in Matera on January 3. In addition to the arrest of the man, the Carabinieri reported a woman at large, who had given them the car to commit the crime.
That day, the pensioner from Matera received a phone call from a self-styled Carabinieri marshal who informed her that her son had hit a boy riding a moped: to avoid arrest, he had to "immediately hand over the sum of eleven thousand euros".
The woman said she only had 300 euros in the house and was convinced to give the money and all the jewelry she had to a man who came to her shortly after. The scam was discovered when the woman's son returned home.
