A Hamas official explained that the ceasefire proposal put forward by Egyptian and Qatari mediators and accepted by the Palestinian organization calls for "a six-week ceasefire," Ynet reported.

After the announcement that Hamas had accepted the ceasefire proposal, there were scenes of jubilation and shots fired in the air in Rafah, the city in the southern Gaza Strip where Israel is planning a major military offensive, a correspondent on the spot reported. “People are crying with joy, thanking Allah and shooting in the air to celebrate.”

Israel has not approved the ceasefire proposal that Hamas has just approved, because it is considered too “softened” and not acceptable to Tel Aviv, Al Jazeera reports.
