An important milestone has been reached at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples, a center of excellence for hearing surgery and cochlear implants. A delicate operation has restored hearing to a 16-year-old boy, thanks to the implantation of a latest-generation 'OSIA' prosthesis.
The operation, performed at the Complex Operating Unit of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the Colli Hospital, was led by Professor Giuseppe Tortoriello and conducted by Doctors Giuseppe Barba and Rosa Grassia. The patient, affected by Franceschetti syndrome, a rare condition that affects craniofacial development, presented serious structural anomalies, including an abnormal development of the mandible and the absence of the external ear.
Thanks to the 'OSIA' prosthesis, which offers a personalized solution to the patient's needs, the young man has achieved a significant improvement in his quality of life, finally being able to regain his hearing and return to leading a normal life. Professor Tortoriello underlines the importance of this success, highlighting that it is the first time that this innovative device has been used at Monaldi Hospital to treat complex craniofacial conditions, offering tangible results for patients.
Anna Iervolino, general manager of the Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli, praised Monaldi as a cutting-edge center for hearing surgery, highlighting the significant number of patients who have benefited from cochlear implants and the exceptional results obtained in laryngeal oncology surgery.
