Naples, bribes and illegal waste trafficking at the Tufino plant: 12 arrests

Naples, 12 arrests for illegal waste trafficking and corruption in the Tufino waste disposal plant.

The Carabinieri of the Ecological Operations Unit (NOE) of Naples, with the support of the Carabinieri of the provinces involved, have arrested 12 people accused of criminal association aimed at the illicit trafficking of waste, aggravated theft and corruption.

The investigation, which lasted approximately six months and was coordinated by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Office, began following reports from SAPNA, the company that manages the municipal solid waste cycle in the Naples metropolitan area, regarding alleged anomalies in waste treatment at the Tufino plant.

The arrested individuals are accused of creating a criminal organization that illegally disposed of hazardous waste at the Tufino plant, at the public expense.

The suspects are accused of stealing the iron coils used in the plant to package waste, worth approximately €20.000.

 Bribes to employees of the Tufino plant

Some employees of the plant Tufino They are accused of having received bribes in exchange for their silence and their collaboration in the illegal disposal of waste.

The illegal activity caused an increase in costs for SAPNA of approximately €500.000. The illegally disposed waste damaged the Tufino plant, blocking the treatment cycle for extended periods. The environment was polluted due to the illegal waste disposal.

Precautionary measures:

The 12 suspects were arrested and placed under house arrest. The two private industrial waste-producing companies involved in the investigation were seized.
