An exceptional event took place at the San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona Hospital in Salerno, where a 38-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl with a very rare malformation. After spending a period of observation in the High-Risk Pregnancy Ward, directed by Dr. Mario Polichetti, the mother was discharged, while the baby girl remains under treatment in the Neonatology Ward, led by Dr. Graziella Corbo, for further checks.
The newborn, born weighing almost 3 kilos, suffers from a very rare genetic condition called 'Situs Inversus', characterized by an abnormal arrangement of the organs of the chest and abdomen, with inversion of position compared to the norm. This means that the heart, stomach and gallbladder are on the right instead of the left, accompanied by a malformation of the vena cava, partially replaced by the hemiazygos vein.
Dr. Polichetti emphasized the extraordinary nature of this event and the importance of careful management to avoid any complications, but also expressed satisfaction for the happy outcome of the birth. The newborn, despite her condition, is in stable conditions and the doctors are committed to providing all the necessary care to ensure her well-being.
