A large fire of waste, plastic and tires broke out yesterday afternoon in Lago Patria, in the province of Napoli, generating a dense cloud of black smoke that invaded the Asse Mediano, creating inconvenience and fear among motorists.
The flames, which started from a pile of illegally abandoned waste adjacent to the highway, quickly spread, releasing a strong, acrid odor that forced residents in the area to barricade themselves in their homes to avoid breathing it.
Numerous cars were forced to stop along the Asse Mediano due to poor visibility caused by the thick blanket of smoke, which created many difficulties and moments of tension among motorists.
Several teams of firefighters intervened on the spot, with two fire trucks working to put out the flames and clean up the area. The extinguishing operations were made even more complex by the presence of plastic among the burning waste, which fueled the production of thick, black, acrid smoke.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but investigators have not ruled out arson. The episode has sparked yet another controversy over the phenomenon of illegal waste dumping and arson, which pose a serious threat to the environment and public health.
“Basta Roghi”, a group of local activists involved in the fight against pollution and fires, expressed their indignation at what happened, denouncing yet another episode of incivility that puts the health of citizens and the environment at risk.
The group has launched an appeal to the authorities to take decisive action to combat the phenomenon of illegal waste dumping and arson, protecting public health and the environment.
