Yesterday, May 16, at the Academy of Sciences of Turin the winners of the thirteenth edition of the GiovedìScienza National Award have been announced, the scientific competition aimed at researchers under 35 from all Italian research institutions, organized by the Turin-based association CentroScienza Onlus, with the aim of promoting and encouraging research protagonists to communicate science.
Among the winners was Gennaro d'Ambrosio, a researcher at the Department of Agriculture at the University of Naples Federico II, who won the GiovedìScienza Futuro Award, assigned to the best feasibility study of the potential applications of a research project.
With the project entitled Biostimulants and microalgae: circular economy for sustainable agriculture, Gennaro D'Ambrosio won the prize of 3000 euros and a support program aimed at developing the project supported by one of the partners of the Award. In addition, the researcher will have the opportunity to participate in a training program dedicated to science communication and "Arte Oratoria", a course to refine public speaking techniques.
“The Biostimulants and microalgae: circular economy for sustainable agriculture project proposes a management of zootechnical waste from a circular economy perspective in which waste is not considered as such, but as a resource that fuels production processes capable of valorizing waste materials and giving life to products with high added value – says Dr. Gennaro d'Ambrosio, winner of the GiovedìScienza Futuro award. These products can be used in agricultural practices aimed at ensuring soil fertility and crop quality in a sustainable manner. The study focuses on a production process in which, on the one hand, zootechnical waste from cattle and/or buffalo farms is used and, on the other, microalgae, microorganisms with great potential. In this context, microalgae play a fundamental role because they reduce the toxicity of waste, making it good soil fertilizers and, at the same time, produce compounds useful as biostimulant formulations for agricultural crops”.
The GiovedìScienza Futuro Award is part of the GiovedìScienza National Award initiative, created by CentroScienza Onlus, an association that since 2011 has given visibility to the work of young Italian researchers who, with their activities, contribute to development and innovation in our country, operating in an Italian research institution. The Award has the dual objective of stimulating attention towards science communication and contributing to the diffusion of business culture, essential elements for those planning a research project. Thirteen editions have collected over 700 applications and involved 407 female researchers and 363 male researchers. 71 applications were received for the 2024 edition, 48 female researchers and 23 male researchers.
The GiovedìScienza Futuro award is also made possible thanks to the contribution and collaboration of the Turin Chamber of Commerce, the Business Incubators of the University of Turin and the Polytechnic of Turin, 2i3T and I3P, and with the LINKS Foundation and the Investors' Club.
