A Castel Volturno Today we commemorated the 16th anniversary of the death of the entrepreneur Domenico Noviello, killed by the killers of the Casalesi clan led by Giuseppe Setola on May 16, 2008, in the midst of the season of terror in the Caserta area.
In a few months, from May to November of that year, the clan's hitmen killed 18 people, including courageous entrepreneurs like Noviello who had denounced and convicted the clan's extortionists, and the six innocent Ghanaians of the San Gennaro massacre.
Present at Piazzetta Domenico Noviello in Baia Verde, right where the entrepreneur was massacred with dozens of gunshots, were the president of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission Chiara Colosimo, with Noviello's son, Massimiliano, and his other children Mimma and Matilde at her side.
“The commemoration is important but it is not enough” said Colosimo; “what the police and the judiciary are already doing – he added – must find the full support of the municipal institutions and especially of Parliament, which I represent today; and perhaps in the security decree being discussed next week, we will have the right recognition for the victims of the mafia, which is missing today” he underlined, referring to the modification of those rules that prevent numerous relatives of innocent victims of organized crime from having recognition by the State, a recognition that also translates into economic support.
“The courage of the organizations of the victims’ families, such as the Fai (Federation of Anti-Racket Associations) – Colosimo highlighted – is the same courage shown by the victims, such as Mimmo Noviello; and their commitment tells us that another city, another freedom, are possible in territories where it often seemed that this was not possible.
Towns near Castel Volturno like Casal di Principe tell us about it, and above all the hope and desire to grow that I find in these territories”. Mimma Noviello, Domenico’s daughter, states that “16 after my father’s murder the world has changed, the way of living and communicating has changed.
But today more than ever, remembering and committing is important, it is necessary, in a historical moment like the current one, invaded by boredom, where one dies without dying, in these used days, where one lives without suffering. We can only commit ourselves and always believe in it”.
