A soccer match degenerated into violence in Caserta, sparking a brawl that led to the suspension of the play-off match of the First Category championship between Casapesenna and Mondragone City. The critical moment was the 2-0 goal disallowed for Casapesenna, which triggered a violent reaction from some players of the home team.
The linesman, who had raised his flag to disallow the goal, was attacked along with the referees. The Mondragone players tried to intervene to defend the refereeing trio, but they were also involved in the brawl, with three of them suffering head injuries and being taken to the hospital.
Mondragone City president Alfredo Campoli denounced the incident, emphasizing the gratuitous violence and the unacceptability of such behavior on the pitch. "It's unacceptable ," Campoli declared, "for a football match to turn into an arena of violence. Our players tried to maintain calm and protect the integrity of the match, but it was impossible to stop the fury unleashed."
Mondragone Mayor Francesco Lavanga also expressed solidarity with the Mondragone City team and strongly condemned the incidents of violence on the pitch. "Football should be a tool for unity and entertainment ," Lavanga stated, "not a playground for brutality. Those responsible for these acts must be identified and punished with the utmost severity." Investigations are currently underway by the State Police, and numerous bans are expected to be issued against those responsible for the violence.
