"The joint committee composed of the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Justice has approved the financial commitment of 166 million euros for 21 prison construction projects," announced Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove.
"The Meloni government is unblocking projects that have been stalled for years, such as the construction of the new prisons in Forlì and San Vito al Tagliamento and the expansion of Brescia Verziano," he specified. "These are essential projects to increase the capacity of the Italian penitentiary system.
Prison overcrowding must be addressed through prison construction, not with the usual prison-emptying measures that erode the certainty of punishment, increase social insecurity, and fail to structurally address the issue of overcrowding. Investing in safety was a commitment we made to the Italians, which we honor today.
