Naples. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mario Talarico, one of the last heirs of the historic family of Neapolitan umbrella makers.
Talarico, who passed away at the age of 93, dedicated his life to carrying on the artisan tradition of the “Antica Mario Talarico” workshop, founded in 1860 by his grandfather Giovanni Buongiovanni.
From his workshop in Via Toledo, Talarico created umbrellas of the highest quality, appreciated by illustrious customers such as Prince Antonio De Curtis (Totò), Pope Francis, Prince Charles of England, Hollywood actors, international singers and world-famous sportsmen.
Its umbrellas, made with fine silks from San Leucio, with handles in real horn, bamboo, Sorrento lemon and cherry, were true works of art, capable of transforming rain into “champagne”, as the company's motto said.
A witness of the Neapolitan artisan tradition
Mario Talarico was more than just a craftsman: he was a true witness of the Neapolitan artisan traditionWith his passing, a piece of the city's history is lost, but his legacy will live on thanks to his nephew Mario Talarico Junior, who has worked alongside his uncle in the shop since 2006.
A future marked by tradition and innovation
Under the guidance of Mario Talarico Junior, the “Antica Mario Talarico” workshop has been able to combine tradition and innovation, opening up to the online world with a website and social media. However, the heart of the company remains firmly anchored to the values and artisan techniques passed down from generation to generation.
A legacy that lives on
The passing of Mario Talarico represents a great loss for the city of Naples and for the world of craftsmanship. But his legacy will live on in his umbrellas, which will continue to protect people from the rain and make them dream with their beauty and uniqueness.
