“The archaeological find stolen from the Boscoreale archaeological area should return to our city”. This is the appeal launched by the mayor of Boscoreale, Pasquale Di Lauro, the day after the news of the agreement between the Italian Government and the German Government to bring back to Italy 25 artefacts belonging to our country.
Yesterday, in fact, a protocol was signed in Berlin between the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, his German counterpart Claudia Roth and the Italian ambassador to Berlin Armando Varricchio. The agreement provides for the return of 25 objects of Italian origin belonging to the Foundation for the Cultural Heritage of Prussia (SPK) chaired by Hermann Parzinger and currently exhibited at the Altes Museum in Berlin in the section of the collection of classical antiquities. Among these is also a fragment of a fresco from a villa in Boscoreale.
“We are pleased to learn of the agreement signed by the Minister Sangiulian with the German government – says the mayor of Boscoreale Pasquale Di Lauro – We believe it is right that the archaeological find stolen from the Boscoreale archaeological area returns to our city. It is right that it returns to the shadow of Vesuvius to be admired by all. We are making, in agreement with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, enormous efforts to support the tourist offer of our territory. Just think of the Antiquarium room dedicated to the excavations underway in the villa of Civita Giuliana, as well as the exhibition of the ceremonial chariot. Our administration is continuing to work on the Biome project as well as that of the Botanical Garden. For this reason, every element that enriches the tourist offer of Boscorale, such as this stolen fresco, is precious, and it is right that it returns to our community”.
