A study published in the journal Philosophy and Cosmology explores the so-called “crypto-terrestrial alien hypothesis”: the idea that they exist and are hidden among us. However, the sources and premises of this research leave no doubt: the research is anything but scientific.

Harvard Research
The starting point is a Harvard study that hypothesizes the existence of aliens living among us earthlings. This study is described as a “speculative reflection” rather than a scientific conclusion.
In the preface to the study in the journal Philosophy and Cosmology, the authors state: “This article is a speculative reflection reflecting the interests and ideas of the authors and is not associated with the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard.
We would also like to emphasize that we believe this hypothesis is most likely false but we still believe it deserves scientific investigation.”
The Transformation of Speculation into News
Despite this premise, speculative reflection has been misinterpreted as a scientific discovery, generating word of mouth outside the academic world. However, the contours of the research remain very ambiguous.
The Hypothesis of Cryptoterrestrial or Ultraterrestrial Aliens
To explain unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP, until recently known as UFOs), Harvard researchers propose a third previously explored approach. This approach does not involve extraterrestrial technology or unidentified terrestrial objects; rather, it suggests that they are sightings from the outer world.
Aliens hiding among us?
In essence, it is hypothesized that aliens already live among us without being recognized. Researchers suggest that these otherworldly beings could travel between space-time dimensions or be time travelers. Another theory is that these aliens live hidden, for example underground. “As with other other otherworldly hypotheses, we must state at the outset that we consider this unlikely. Essentially, however, we do not consider it impossible,” the researchers write, estimating the probability of one in ten.
Why This Research Should Not Be Taken Seriously
Despite its air of mystery, the study was not subjected to “peer-review,” a process of critical evaluation by other specialists not directly involved in the research. This means that the validity of the research has not been certified according to strict academic standards.
Problems and shaky sources
The research is based on weak assumptions, starting with the accusations of David Grusch, the whistleblower who claimed that the US government is hiding the truth about aliens. These accusations, doubted by various experts, are nevertheless taken as true by the researchers.
The sources cited in the study raise further doubts. These include science fiction works such as “Journey to the Center of the Earth” by Jules Verne, which is used to hypothesize that aliens are hiding underground. The study also cites less credible sources such as episodes of Joe Rogan’s podcast and videos taken from YouTube, including fake videos of Apollo missions.
Speculative reflection or research?
The authors themselves admit that their research should be considered mere speculation. However, they appeal to investigative curiosity: “We believe that the crypto-terrestrial hypothesis should be actively investigated rather than reactively waiting for relevant data to be revealed.”
