Article Key Points
Training and Career Start
Pugliese, born in Naples, graduated from the Silvio D'Amico Academy in Rome in 1969. Thanks to the staging of 'The Baron in the Trees', he met Italo Calvino, who entrusted him with the theatrical adaptation of his novel. Pugliese then began a career as a playwright, parallel to that of directing, through which he would tackle numerous elaborations of literary texts for theatrical staging.
The Rigor of an Artistic Vision
From 1981 to 1984 he moved to Mola di Bari to work, as artistic director, with the Teatro Sud cooperative, with the project of founding a permanent theatre workshop. He then returned to live in Rome and directed many shows, about one hundred and sixty, produced by the main permanent theatres, such as those of Genoa, Catania and Rome, also working with numerous private companies. With Luca De Filippo's company he directed 'O Scarfalietto' by Scarpetta in 1986, 'Ogni anno punto ea capo' in 1988 and 'Questi fantasmi' by Eduardo De Filippo in 1992.
Collaborations and Successes
In 1978 he staged Raffaele Viviani's 'Il circo equestre Sgueglia' for the Teatro di Roma. In more recent seasons, he has directed, among other things, 'I Viceré' with Turi Ferro and 'Il segno verde' by Pier Maria Rosso di San Secondo for the Teatro Stabile di Catania. Since 1997 he has been the artistic director of the West Indies company with which he restaged the show 'Masaniello' and created, on behalf of the Taormina Arte Festival, in October 2009, a show based on Curzio Malaparte's novel 'La pelle', which was later hosted at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples and the Teatro Argentina in Rome.
Awards and Recognitions
Numerous shows and actors directed by Pugliese have received recognition and awards such as the Ubu Prize, the Biglietto d'oro Agis and Gli Olimpici del Teatro. His works have had a wide consensus at European level, with presences at the main festivals of Edinburgh, Zurich, Nancy and Paris.
