Summer 2024 will be a thrill for motorway travellers: a sandwich at a service station can cost up to 7 euros, 70% more than at the bar down the street.
This is according to the latest investigation by Altroconsumo, which monitored prices at 22 service stations in Milan, Naples, Rome, and Venice.
Breakfast nightmare: cappuccino at 1,84 euros (+12%) and brioche at 1,72 euros (+26%). A plain coffee? 1,35 euros, a full 14% more.
Thirst nightmare: water, still or sparkling, costs on average over €3 per liter, compared to €0,67 at the supermarket. Carbonated drinks (orange soda and cola) reach nearly €8 per liter.
Craving for ice cream? Prepare to spend 3 euros for a cone, with a price per kilo of 38,51 euros.
Salty snacks: a bag of crisps costs on average 3,13 euros (23,08 euros per kilo). A 100g chocolate bar ranges from 1,20 to 6,29 euros.
Altroconsumo denounces: "Unacceptable prices that take advantage of travelers' need to stop on the highway. Intervention by the authorities is needed to calm the price increases and protect consumers."
