Avellino. A moment of great apprehension in the Avellino prison where, yesterday afternoon, two very serious episodes occurred: a prisoner attempted suicide and a prisoner started a fire in his cell.
The prisoner, confined in the female section, tried to take her own life. Fortunately, thanks to the timely intervention of the Penitentiary Police officers, the woman was saved and transported to the hospital in Avellino, where she was then discharged in the morning.
Almost simultaneously, a inmate set fire to his cell. The flames destroyed the furnishings and seriously jeopardized the safety of the unit. This is the same prisoner who attempted to escape from the registration room a few days ago.
These serious incidents have caused great concern among the prison staff. The general secretary of Sappe, Donato Capece, denounced the lack of attention by the competent authorities towards the critical issues of the Avellino prison: "It is disheartening to note that the serious and objective problems of this structure are not taken into consideration as they deserve".
The regional secretary of Sappe, Tiziana Guacci, also expressed her concern about the situation in the prison: "These episodes demonstrate how high the alarm is in the Irpinia prison. The staff on duty is tired and discouraged by the lack of concrete and decisive answers".
Yesterday's events once again highlight the need for urgent interventions to improve the safety and livability conditions of the Avellino prison. It is essential to guarantee the protection of the health and rights of all inmates, as well as the safety of the Penitentiary Police officers who operate within the facility on a daily basis.
