Antigone: a dilapidated prison, overcrowded and without water at night
In the Avellino prison, two suicide attempts have been reported in recent days. The facility houses 616 inmates for a capacity of 507, and almost all sections are in disrepair.
This is what the Antigone association emphasizes, whose observers visited the prison.
The two suicide attempts involved a woman who had recently arrived at the institute from prison The women's prison in Pozzuoli, recently evacuated due to bradyseism. The other case involved a prisoner in solitary confinement.

"With the exception of the recently built pavilion dedicated to intensified treatment," Antigone observers explain, "the remaining sections appear in dilapidated condition. Running water is unavailable from 22 p.m. to 6 a.m. Many rooms still lack showers and hot water; some have leaks, are completely cramped, and are moldy."
"The women's section, in particular, has plexiglass screens on the windows that prevent the passage of air, even on days when the thermometer reads 41 degrees," the observers add.
The healthcare sector suffers from a shortage of specialists and poor service due to constant medical turnover. In particular, there is a shortage of psychiatrists despite the administration of psychopharmacological therapy to more than half of the prison population.
