A child from Legnano risked his life after accidentally ingesting a tablet of an antineoplastic drug. The drug, used to treat tumors, is not suitable for children and could have had serious consequences on the child's health.
Fortunately, the child was saved thanks to the timely intervention of the Poison Control Center of the Mario Negri Institute, which identified the AOU San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona of Salerno as the only hospital in Italy capable of analyzing the child's blood and urine to detect the presence of the drug.
Il Ruggi of Salerno, in fact, is equipped with cutting-edge instruments and a team of highly qualified professionals, led by Professor Amelia Filippelli. Thanks to their expertise, they were able to perform the required dosage quickly and with maximum precision.
The analysis revealed that there were no traces of the drug in the child's blood and urine, thus ruling out the worst.
The uniqueness of Ruggi in this specific sector is due to two factors
Cutting-edge instrumentation: Ruggi has equipment capable of identifying even the smallest quantity of active ingredient present in the blood and urine.
Highly competent staff: the Ruggi professionals are all students of Professor Amelia Filippelli, a reference figure in the field of clinical pharmacology.
The Pharmacology Department of Ruggi is one of the few in Italy to guarantee such a complete clinical pharmacology service. In addition to the analysis of antineoplastic drugs, the department also offers:
Pharmacogenetic and pharmacokinetic analyses: for the accurate measurement of immunosuppressive and neoplastic drugs.
Consultations and collaborations: to promote the well-being and protection of operators exposed to environmental contamination.
The case of the child from Legnano demonstrates once again the excellence of Ruggi di Salerno in the field of medicine. The facility represents a point of reference for the care of patients with complex pathologies and for the protection of public health.
