Bellizzi. Yesterday evening, during the final rally of the mayoral candidate Nicholas Pellegrino in Bellizzi, in the province of Salerno, a violent brawl broke out between his supporters and those of his rival Angel Maddalo.
Article Key Points
It all started with a political squabble, which then degenerated into mutual accusations and insults. Tensions quickly rose and, in a few moments, a massive brawl broke out involving dozens of people.
The two groups faced each other with slaps, kicks and punches, causing panic among those present who tried to get away from the area. The screams, especially from women who could not find a way to escape, made the situation even more chaotic.
A policeman injured
The one who got the worst of it was a policeman, son of a candidate for the city council, who was hit in the nose during the clashes. The carabinieri, who intervened promptly with three patrols, tried to quell the brawl and to restore order in the streets.
The police have started investigations to reconstruct the dynamics of the clashes and identify those responsible. The aim is to identify the promoters of the brawl and ascertain their responsibilities.
Damage to a candidate's car
In addition to the policeman being injured, the brawl also caused damage to a city council candidate's promotional car.
The Bellizzi episode represents a warning against violence and the lack of respect that unfortunately, on some occasions, characterize the political climate. It is necessary that electoral campaigns take place in a climate of civility and democratic debate, without degenerating into episodes of aggression and intolerance.
Law enforcement agencies will continue to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of citizens, both during election rallies and in any other context.
A Call for Responsibility
All citizens are invited to a sense of responsibility and mutual respect, to prevent similar episodes from happening again in the future. Democracy is based on dialogue and constructive discussion, not on violence and intimidation.
