Naples. A woman, the mother of an inmate at Secondigliano prison, was arrested by prison police after attempting to smuggle drugs into the facility.

The woman, with a criminal record for drug dealing, was stopped while she was about to have a conversation with her son, who was being held in the Mediterranean Department. During routine checks, officers discovered that the woman was hiding 100 grams of hashish in her socks.

Lello Munno, regional vice-secretary of the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (Sappe), and Donato Vaia, delegate of the Sappe, expressed “the satisfaction of the Sappe” to the staff of prison police from Secondigliano “who with professionalism and cunning, carries out a daily battle to combat drug trafficking within the penitentiary, despite the critical lack of staff”.

The drug problem in prison

Donato Capece, secretary general of Sappe, stressed that “the problem of drugs entering prison is an increasingly frequent issue, due to the many drug addicts detained in Italian facilities”. According to Sappe data, almost 30% of prisoners in Italy have drug problems.

Sappe proposes to remove drug addicts from prison and treat them outside, in order to limit the entry of drugs into prisons. The union also asks for an increase in staff and the provision of technological tools to combat drug trafficking.

The Sappe requests

“While on the one hand we must compliment the penitentiary police personnel of the Secondigliano penitentiary center who have operated once again with professionalism and a spirit of sacrifice, on the other hand we do not understand why adequate measures are not being taken to restore safety and legality,” says Capece.
