Naples: The first-degree trial against the alleged drug trafficking network led by former cocaine broker Bruno Carbone began yesterday morning with the prosecutor's closing statement.

The prosecutor requested 19 sentences for a total of 200 years in prison. The highest sentences were requested for the leaders of the organization, with sentences between 16 and 20 years in prison.

The trial originates from the investigation that culminated with a raid last January, when almost 30 people were arrested. The investigations, coordinated by the DDA and conducted by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Naples, allowed to eliminate two groups that operated on the Barcelona-Amsterdam-Naples axis.

The wiretaps and the role of Bruno Carbone

The investigations were made possible thanks to the crack in the network “Encrochat”, which allowed the interception of communications between the associates, which took place via cryptophones initially considered unassailable. The interceptions allowed investigators to trace the two groups and identify Bruno Carbone, a luxury fugitive in Dubai and right-hand man of drug trafficker Raffaele Imperiale.

The two groups and the role of the Caivano Green Park

The investigation identified two distinct groups, both involved in drug trafficking:

First group: led by Vincenzo and Salvatore Della Monica.
Second group: led by Simone Bartiromo, Roberto Merolla and Giovanni Cortese.
The investigation also involved the Parco Verde of Caivano, where part of the illicit activity took place.

Now it is up to the defense team to develop a strategy to defend the defendants. The trial will continue with the hearing of witnesses and defense speeches.
