Salerno. Moments of high tension yesterday evening in the Fuorni prison in Salerno, where an inmate flooded his cell, unleashing the anger of other inmates and attacks on Penitentiary Police personnel.
As reported by Tiziana Guacci, Campania secretary of the Independent Union of Penitentiary Police, an inmate in the Article 32 section flooded his cell, causing the entire unit to flood.
This gesture unleashed the fury of another inmate who attempted to attack him.
The situation quickly escalated: the inmate who had flooded the cell began banging on the bars of the security door, inciting protests from other inmates who, in turn, began slamming their own doors and shouting, demanding the person responsible be removed.
To avoid further disturbances and to ensure the safety of the unit, the prisoner was transferred to the holding room. But during the transfer, he attacked the Penitentiary Police officers, biting one officer on the right leg and another on the left wrist.
Other officers were involved in an attempt to contain the man. "We are tired of the constant attacks on Penitentiary Police personnel," the union denounces.
"Critical events occur every day in the region's penitentiaries. We once again forcefully demand serious and appropriate measures to restore legality, order, and security in Campania's prisons and ensure the safety of staff, who work with great sacrifice in understaffed and overcrowded facilities."
Solidarity and closeness to the staff of Penitentiary Police Fuorni's concerns were also expressed by Donato Capece, secretary general of the SAPPE. "The situation in Campania's prisons is alarming," Capece stated.
"In recent weeks, other officers have also been subjected to attacks by inmates. Staffing is increasingly limited, partly due to these now commonplace incidents.
We can no longer postpone equipping the Penitentiary Police with tasers and every other tool useful for defending themselves from the violence of criminals who have no respect for the rules and the people who represent the State."
