caserta. The military of the Alife Forestry Carabinieri Nucleus, together with the veterinary doctors of the ASL Animal Health Service
of Piedimonte Matese, directed by Dr. Forgione, have proceeded to slaughter all the pigs of a farm located in Ailano, in the province of Caserta, which was found not to be registered with the ASLThis farm had already been subject to administrative seizure last March, to protect public health and the national livestock heritage.
This operation is part of a wider control campaign that the Carabinieri Forestali, together with the veterinary doctors of the ASL, have been carrying out for several months to monitor all the farms livestock in the Matese area.
It is important to underline that stringent national and EU health regulations, based on the precautionary principle, have been introduced to avoid the spread of epidemic diseases among livestock, some of which can also be transmitted to humans.
Adopt the measures required by European regulations
These regulations do not allow for the regularization of the detention of animals for which traceability is not demonstrated. In such cases, it is unfortunately mandatory to proceed with the slaughter of the livestock.
Situations of irregularity like this have already been found in numerous livestock farms in the Matesino ASL District, for which the Campania Region will adopt similar measures to cull untraced animals. The meat of these animals cannot be sent for food consumption, due to the potential health risk they represent.
