Since the beginning of 2024, the “Sant'Anna e San Sebastiano” Hospital in Caserta has performed 3 multi-organ harvests on 8 observations of brain death. These interventions, made possible by the generosity of donors and their families, have ignited the hope of life for many patients waiting for a transplant. In addition, 35 declarations of will from citizens for the donation of organs, tissues and cells have been collected.
These data will be the focus of the training conference entitled “Organ Donation: Implementing Culture and Safety in Donation and Transplantation,” which will be held on Monday 17 June in the hospital's main hall. The event aims to promote the culture of organ donation.
“The initiative is one of the many activities undertaken by theAORN of Caserta to increase the number of donors, constituting a priority objective to pursue,” said Health Director Angela Annecchiarico. Annecchiarico has given a strong boost to the sector, working with passion and determination together with a multidisciplinary team created specifically for organ donation activities. This team includes health workers coordinated by Patrizia Tidona, Local Organ and Tissue Donation Coordinator, and Giovanna Verrillo, Representative of the Sportello Amico Transpianti.
The scientific event is organized in collaboration with the Regional Transplant Center of Campania and will be divided into three sessions. These sessions will describe the organizational and operational machine of the AORN Casertana through the reports of directors, specialists, nurses and technicians of the hospital's operating units, together with the representation of the Regional Transplant Center, represented by Dr. Barbara Leone and Dr. Vincenzo Del Giudice.
The first session will examine the role of the Sportello Amico Trapianti and the Regional Transplant Center, with a focus on organizational and communication aspects, coordinated by the Local Coordinator. The second session will delve into the medical, medico-legal, technical and nursing aspects of the brain death observation process, the maintenance of organs to be harvested and the harvesting process, illustrating the national guidelines on donor suitability and evaluation. The third session will focus on cornea harvesting and follow-up activities for liver and kidney transplant recipients.
“The Symposium,” declare the organizers Tidona and Verrillo, “aims to promote and nurture the culture of organ donation, starting with the workers of our hospital, so that each one, in sharing it, can be an ambassador. Transplants save lives, but without organ donation, there can be no transplants: this is our message, our mantra.”
The conference, which will begin at 8:45, will be introduced by the greeting of the Strategic Management. This will be followed by the report of Dr. Anna Fabrizio, who for over twenty years has been the driving force of the donation process in the AORN of Caserta as head of the Organ and Tissue Donation Coordination.
