An act of great altruism and generosity has allowed six patients waiting for a transplant to have a better future. On Wednesday, June 19, the multi-specialist team at the San Leonardo hospital performed a multi-organ harvest on a 50-year-old man, resident in the town of Stabia.
The man, married and father of a family, had arrived at the hospital in critical conditions a few days earlier, culminating in the confirmation of brain death. The generosity of the donor's family was immediate, allowing the removal of vital organs through the coordination of the Regional Center Transplants.
According to the ASL Napoli 3 Sud, the liver, heart and kidneys were destined for patients waiting for a transplant. The corneas, instead, were collected by the internal team of the San Leonardo hospital and will be delivered to the Campania eye bank.
The liver was sent outside the region, while the heart will save the life of a patient from Naples. “A gesture of great civility”, declared the general director of the ASL Napoli 3 Sud, Giuseppe Russo, expressing his condolences and closeness to the donor's family. “Our health authority works tirelessly, in collaboration with the Regional Transplant Center directed by Dr. Antonio Corcione, to address the chronic shortage of organs for transplant activity.”
At the end of the operation, the medical staff paid homage to the donor with a bow, a gesture of respect and gratitude. “Transplant surgery often represents the only possibility to improve the quality of life of those who, for example, are attached to a dialysis machine, live with an artificial heart or have lost their sight”, conclude from the ASL Napoli 3 Sud.
