Naples. The Naples Court of Appeal has acquitted a 61-year-old man from Cardito (Naples) of charges of sexual abuse of a minor, "because the facts are not proven." In January 2020, the man had been sentenced to nine years in prison and a year of detention by the Naples North Court.
The investigations, coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office of North Naples and conducted by the Flying Squad, led to the arrest of the man in July 2018. According to the accusation, later revealed to be unfounded on appeal, the 61-year-old had induced a minor with mental problems to commit and suffer sexual acts, taking advantage of his role as legal representative of the community where the boy was hosted.
"Justice has finally been served," commented Giovanni Carlo Esposito, the defendant's lawyer. "Together with expert witness Giuseppe Sartori, we overturned the charges and the psychological diagnostic tests, proving our client's innocence," the lawyer added, emphasizing the serious damage to the man's reputation due to the media coverage of the case.
