Naples. San Giovanni Bosco Hospital: the Continis controlled everything, from parking lots to intensive care: 11 arrests and a disturbing picture
The San Giovanni Bosco Hospital in Naples was under the control of the Contini clan, one of the city's most powerful Camorra families. This is what emerged from a large-scale operation by the Carabinieri of the Naples Investigative Unit, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, which this morning led to the arrest of 11 people.
The suspects are accused of extortion, mafia association, and infiltrating the clan within the hospital. The investigation, launched in December 2021, has revealed a disturbing picture: the Contini clan He controlled the hospital parking lots, the canteen, and even the intensive care unit.
The statements of the repentant Iuorio
The most serious accusations come from Vincenzo Iuorio, a collaborator of justice and former affiliate of the Sautto-Ciccarelli clan of the Verde park in Caivano. Iuorio told investigators that in 2018, when a relative of the boss Sautto was seriously injured in a car accident, they turned to the Continis for preferential treatment in the hospital.
"We didn't pay for parking - Iuorio declared - and when we entered the ward, the doctors made themselves available, gave us gowns and even let us enter intensive care."
The anti-racketeering pact works: the wiretap proves it
A wiretap captured by the Carabinieri during the investigation demonstrates the effectiveness of the anti-racket pact. In this conversation, two of the arrested men, intimidated by the police's controls, decide not to extort a business and justify themselves to the instigator: "Luigi, we're gone.", says one of those arrested. And the instigator replies: "Well, you're right, I went to see too." "It's over, brother, they're not the same people they used to be." says the extortionist, demoralized by the fact that more and more businessmen in Naples are reporting the racket.
Here's who's arrested
In this morning's raid, the Carabinieri served a detention order against Ciro Aieta, Carmine Botta, Giuseppe Buccelli, Gennaro De Luca, Gaetano Esposito, Luigi Perrotta, and Domenico Scutto. Eugenio Finizio, Raffaele Schiano, and Luca Botta were placed under house arrest. A 45-year-old man believed to be one of the Contini clan's treasurers is currently unaccounted for.
This morning's operation, in addition to giving another hard blow to the Camorra and to the attempt to infiltrate the institutions by the Contini clan already hit in recent months, as reported in the Naples news, with the blitz against the entrepreneurial part of the gang.
