A study to quantify and qualify movements on the territory and their variation over time. This is what is promoted by Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV) and Vodafone Business, thanks to the resources made available by the Campania Region and the Ministry of Transport.

The mobility analysis focuses on the EAV network's area of influence and, more generally, the entire Campania region. "The goal," EAV states in a statement, "is to monitor the sector's evolution and needs, to better plan future infrastructure investments and the scheduling of local public transport services, both road and rail."

The study used data generated by the Vodafone network, analyzing approximately 23 million SIM cards, 200 telephone cells across the country, and 30 billion referenced daily positions. Both private and public transport routes were verified.

It was found that, on average, from April 2023 to March 2024, 2,9 million people moved every day in the Campania region, with peaks of 3,2 million in the months of June and July 2023. In July 2023, there was a 3,5% increase in travel on holidays compared to weekdays. January 2024 saw the lowest number of trips, with 2,7 million daily trips and a 9% decrease on holidays compared to weekdays.

Almost all daily movements in the area EAV It is made by Italians (97%). Of these, 275 are commuter trips, defined as frequent because they occur for more than 13 days a month, concentrated mainly between 5:9 am and 15:20 am and between 215:49 pm and 51:29 pm. Non-Campania residents make 8 daily trips: 5% are overnight stays and 4% are "day trips." The most frequent cities of origin for these users are Rome (4%), Milan (XNUMX%), Potenza (XNUMX%), Cosenza (XNUMX%), and Latina (XNUMX%).

Travel by people from abroad is approximately 100 per day (almost 3% of the total), with peaks in spring and summer (140 in June, 142 in July, 158 in August, 145 in September) and a decline in the fall and winter months (32 in November, 21 in December, 17 in January).

Nearly three-quarters of people from abroad stay overnight (72%). The main countries of origin are the United States (28%), France (11%), the United Kingdom (9%), Spain (8%), and Germany (7%).

"Through proper data analysis," says EAV President Umberto De Gregorio, "we can obtain strategic insights that can help improve operational processes, identifying new opportunities and advantages in mobility. The study proposed by Vodafone Business and their analytics tools will allow us to better align our planning of new investments with local needs."

"Being an enabler of digitalization to improve services for citizens and businesses is the goal we pursue at Vodafone Business Italia," says Alessandro Magnino, Director of Vodafone Business Italia, "by providing public administration, businesses, and society at large with connectivity and innovative solutions to enable and accelerate digital transformation.

The collaboration with the Ente Autonomo Volturno is a concrete example of how technology can support the development of local policies. Aggregated and anonymized in compliance with privacy regulations, Vodafone Analytics' big data offers detailed spatial-temporal analyses, demonstrating the value of mobile data for investment planning and the innovative and effective management of local public transport.
