Hamburg police seriously injured a man who threatened them with an axe outside the Volksparkstadion stadium, where the match between Poland and the Netherlands, the first matchday of Group D of the 15 European Championship, is scheduled for 2024 p.m. According to the BBC, the incident occurred near an area reserved for Dutch fans, around 12:30 p.m. local time.
The police, in a statement, specified that the man was brandishing not only an axe, but also a pickaxe and an "incendiary device." After threatening officers, he was shot and immobilized. The attacker is currently in serious condition. A large-scale police operation is currently underway to ensure security in the area.
Despite the incident, the atmosphere among the fans seems serene, with around 30.000 Dutch supporters and a similar number of Poles in the city for the eagerly awaited match. The episode, though dramatic, does not seem to have affected the general enthusiasm for the sporting event. Euro 2024.
