The Chiaia funicular in Naples remains closed, and its reopening has been postponed once again. According to the latest rumors, the facility won't reopen until the end of the year, with a possible postponement as late as December.
This means that the closure, which began on October 1, 2022, will last more than two years, well beyond the ten months planned for the twenty-yearly overhaul. This is a truly negative record, as Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori Collinari and founder of the Facebook group "Naples: the "orphans" of the Chiaia funicular," points out.
Capodanno denounces the delays and managerial incompetence, highlighting how the construction of the funicular in 1889 took less than two years, while the overhaul will take more than double that. Furthermore, the reasons for the extension of the contract's schedule from six to ten months have not been explained.
Yet another inconvenience for citizens, who find themselves deprived of an important means of transport for such a long time. funicular of Chiaia It connects the central area of Vomero with the Chiaia district, and is used by approximately 15 thousand people per day.
The prolonged closure has also had a negative impact on tourism, with a decrease in visitors to the Vomero area.
