According to the Mayor of Naples, the Chiaia funicular will not reopen to the public until next fall due to overhauls that have been ongoing for two years. Gennaro Capodanno, engineer and president of the Comitato Valori Collinari, strongly contests this situation.
Capodanno emphasizes that the closure times are unacceptably long, especially compared to the mere six months initially planned. He also criticizes the Mayor's assertion that the work is "on schedule," pointing out that the funicular was built in the 19th century using contemporary technology, at the same time as this overhaul.
Capodanno also disputes other inaccuracies in the Mayor's statement. First, he clarifies that national regulations for cableways require an inspection every twenty years, not every thirty. Furthermore, the technical lifespan of these systems is 60 years, which can be achieved after two inspections at 20 and 40 years.
The closing of the funicular of Chiaia, which serves approximately 15.000 passengers per day, is creating significant inconvenience for the citizens of Vomero. Capodanno asks to speed up the work and provide clear and precise information on the reopening times.
